Garden blues October 30, 2008

I think I already have the winter garden blues.  It’s either that or I’m just really tired and burned out.  I can’t seem to get motivated to even think about my gardens.  Usually I don’t feel like this for at least another month, just before the winter catalogs start to come in.

The really weird thing is it’s still warm enough to be working outside, but I can find a hundred reasons why I don’t want to.  Maybe this is my first encounter with garden burn out.  There was a lot going on last summer.

Maybe I just need a change a scenery.  If that’s it then the timing is great.  We are going on vacation next week.  Maybe getting away from my little piece of land will help me appreciate it much more when we get home.  I hope so.

Unusual Halloween Weather October 29, 2008

Halloween in Colorado is usually a miserable affair for all involved.  The poor kids are freezing and even the thought of candy can’t them warm.  The parents with them just want to get home to a warm drink.   Even those that don’t have to be outside get cold each time the bell rings for the trick or treater’s.  The reason for all this misery, the weather.  It almost always sucks comes Halloween night.

With one day to go, this year maybe different.  Weather forecasters are saying 60 degrees and no rain, snow or howling winds.  I can’t remember the last time that happened.

In fact I was just sitting outside enjoying some of this nice weather.  Two honey bee’s were still out collecting last minute honey.  The violets were about the only source of honey left though.  All the other plants look like it is almost Halloween.  They kind of look like skeletons themselves with all their leaves and flowers gone.

Love thy neighbor October 29, 2008

It doesn’t extend to loving their trees.  Our neighbors have about eight cotton wood trees about six feet or less from the fence line we share.

They planted them about ten years ago to help cool the house in the summer (they are on their south side.)  A very good and environmental friendly idea.  I also enjoy the trees in the summer.  They help to keep my car sitting in the drive cool along with providing shade for my plants in the heat of summer.

But come fall the leaves from all those cotton woods trees don’t seem to know what side of the property line they belong on.  Each fall I rake as many if not more cotton wood leaves than I do from leaves on my own tree.  I know, I enjoy some of the benefits so I shouldn’t mind some extra leaves.

But I do mind.  I’m not even sure why.  I really like the neighbors.  I don’t mind the trees any other time of the year, but I hate those leaves.

A dog’s gift from heaven October 28, 2008

The other day I was sitting outside enjoying some sun.  I had taken Bubba and Allie outside with me and they were each kind of doing their own thing roaming around the yard.

Bubba happened to be towards the back of the yard under some trees.  All of the sudden something fell from the tree right in of him.

Being a dog he started to sniff at it and put it in his mouth.  I was afraid it was a bird and yelled at him to drop it.  Which he did, to my great surprise.

I walked over still expecting to find a bird, dead or alive.  Instead what I found was a bone.  It looked like a rib bone, but I’m sure.  Having know idea where it came (besides the tree) I picked it up and throw it in the trash.

I think what happened was a squirrel either found the bone in another dogs yard or a trash can and was trying to take it to his home in our big old tree.

I’m sure Bubba thought that it was a gift from heaven, if only for a brief while.  How cool to have bones fall from the trees.

Our neighbors of 12 years sold their house and are moving on.  I’m sad to see them go, they were great neighbors.

As I was looking over at their front yard it occurred to me that the animal population around here is also going to be sad to see them go.

They have feed the squirrels through the winters ever since we have have known them.  I’m sure the squirrels can find plenty of other food.  They get all the left overs from my gardens and I know they made quit a haul from my sunflowers.  There are also the trash cans that line the alley.

Then there are the birds.  I noticed the birdbath with no water in it.  Our neighbors kept a dog bowl in the birdbath for fresh water.  I’ve thought about getting a birdbath myself before.  I might now.  I could put it out front away from the dogs.

So while I am sad and I will miss my friends and neighbors I know the animals will miss them too.

Beans or no Beans October 26, 2008

Nothing says fall like a good chili.  Soup is a close second, but in our house chili always wins out.

Chili can be an all day process or only take about 30 minutes.  Both are good so the choice is personal.

Today’s chili will be the 30 minute version.  I was under the weather yesterday so I didn’t plan for the all day process.

Being under the weather is another good reason to eat chili.  We load ours done with green chili’s which have more vitamin C than orange’s.  The green chili will open up the sinus’ and clear out the stuffy head.

Like a good stew almost anything can go in a chili.  I have tomato’s in every window sill in the kitchen, so I’ll use a couple of them.  I have onion’s so I’ll use them also.  And yes we’ll use beans.  Beans always go in our chili.  I know people that make chili without beans, I just don’t know why.

I’ve decided to add another “page” to my blog.  The new subject is comfort food.  It makes sense that I would blog about food since I grow so many of the vegetables that we eat.

I hope you enjoy reading future blogs about food and cooking and how to use the vegetables that you can grow and preserve yourself.

Well, I had big plans yesterday for the yard.  Instead I was attacked by a cold Friday afternoon.  I’m feeling much better now, but nothing got done outside yesterday.  And of course the weather isn’t near as nice today as it was yesterday.

Later this week it’s supposed to be real nice again so I’ll try and tackle some of the leaves then.  I’ll either have more to rake or maybe none at all if the wind blows them all away.

Today’s blog is a public service announcement from Bubba and Allie.  They would like everyone to go to www.freekibble.com every day and play for free food.  They know that they are spoiled and live the good life, but not all dogs are so lucky.  Free Kibble helps out some of those less fortunate dogs.

Raking up the Gold October 24, 2008

Okay, not real gold, just gold colored leaves.  But I’ll be raking them up most of the day on Saturday.  I really don’t mind the leaves, but we have this one tree out front that grows these long bean pod things.  They are a royal in the ___.  They’re about 12 inches long and when they dry out they are be sharp as spears.  Not fun, not to mention all the holes they put in bags.

Okay, I just had a side thought, (it happens sometimes) does anyone make canvas leave bags?  They would be SO MUCH better than plastic.  I don’t throw my leaves in the trash, they all go in the compost, but I use the bags to get them there.  I can reuse a plastic bag about 6 six times, but canvas, that would be cool.

Back to raking now, it’s supposed to be a nice on Saturday and the raking will get me out of the house so I can soak up some sunshine.
