The tree guys are coming today to start removing the old tree.  It’s exciting and sad at the same time.  I’m sorry to see it go but at an estimated 120 years old it had a good life and we won’t have to worry about it damaging our house in a wind storm.

All the tomato seedlings are doing great.  The first pepper seedling popped up yesterday.  Now I’m just waiting for more.  I’ll keep a close eye on them the next couple of days.

Bubba is finally regulated on his insulin and diet.  He has lost about 4 pounds and doesn’t have to go to the vet again for 3 months.  I know he’s happy about that.  He’s such a good boy for the vet techs but we know he hates having to spend the day there.

With any luck I’ll get a load of manure to add to my compost this weekend.  The last several weekends have been crappy weather (pardon the pun) so we couldn’t get it.  Along with the manure I’ll get some straw to use as mulch.  It’s all coming from a local dairy farm.

Great news, the afghan is done.  I finished it Monday night.  Now I need another project to keep me busy at night.

And after 13 years in this house we are finally doing something to the kitchen.  Paint, some new cabinets and counter tops and a new floor.  The old floor is from about 1950.  It sucks

0012So I’m in the craft department of our local Walmart getting yarn to ffinish my latest afghan.  I can’t find the reddish color that I need in my usual brand (go figure) so I start checking other brands.

That’s when I found Carron Simply Soft Eco, yarn made from (get this) recycled plastic bottles.  I found the color that I needed (it’s wine county in the picture) and a new product.

I came home and checked out Carron’s website www.carron.com.  If I had used Carron to make the whole afghan I would have kept at least 10 bottles out of a land fill.

I figure that if my mom (the afghan queen) starts using Carron’s she can single handily empty a land fill of all it’s plastic bottles in a year.

I’ve been working every night on the afghan.  I don’t know who I thought I was making the thing for.  It must have been the Jolly Green Giant.  It is so so long, it takes about an hour to stitch one row.  But with working on it every night it is getting wider.  I hope to finish before to long, not only because I’m looking forward to moving on to the next unfinished project, but because when it warms up it will be to hot to work with it.

The Chia herbs are doing great.  I’m still not sure what the sponage like peat mix is, but the baggies on top are making a difference.  Basically all they are doing is making a small green house for each plant.  It’s a great idea for starting any seeds and I may try it on some more in the next week or two.

making_needlework_accessoriesI like doing crafts, especially needle work, almost as much as I like gardening.  They help to keep me busy during the colder months when there isn’t much gardening happening.

My only problem with crafts are that I usually have several going at one time.  While this is great for variety, I don’t feel like I’m getting anything done.

My solution, I’ve decided to have a craft of the month.  For the rest of this month I’ll be working on finishing an afghan I started a year ago.

Hopefully I’ll finish it and move on to the next project.

Craft Project Gone Bad December 18, 2008

Ever run across a project and think it would be so cool to try it?  The project sounds really simple and is just the thing you’re looking for.  Easy instructions and supplies you already have around the house.  Piece of cake right?

Wrong.  For a week now I’ve been trying to make magnet bulletin boards for my daughter and co-workers.  The problem seems to be the cookie sheets I’m using.  They are the non stick kind.  Great for baking but lousy for this project.  Because nothing is sticking.

You’re supposed to cover the cookie sheet with material, paper or wall paper to jazz it up it and make it personal.  But no glue that I have tried stuck.

Finally about an hour ago I think I figured it out.  I dug out some old stencils and paint and so far it’s sticking.  If this doesn’t work I’ll call the project a failure and go a present.

christmas-crafts1I had a lot of crafts on my Christmas to do list this year and I can’t believe but I almost done.  I like doing crafts and it’s makes me not feel so bad about watching TV at night.

So what have I done?  I made a rag wreath.  It came out pretty nice.  I made a button and bead Christmas tree.  I love buttons and have always wanted a button tree.  I added the beads, well, just because.

Today me and my daughter made tin can lanterns.  You should have seen us with the drill.  We probably should have used the nail and hammer that the instructions called for.  The drill was my husbands idea.  Go figure, a guy wanting to use a power drill.  I’ll get the candles in them in about an hours and see how they look then.  One reason I wanted to make them was because they reminded me of the old fashioned luminaries that I grew up with in New Mexico.

Tonight I’ll finish my gift card envelopes.  This year I’m doing something pretty simple.  I took wrapping paper and cookie cutters to make snow flakes, Christmas trees, stars and bells.  I’m using fabric paint to help them stick to the envelope.  The paint also gives it a 3-D look.

My last project will be magnet boards for my co-workers.  I’m using a cookie sheet that I had my husband drill a hole in for hanging.  Then I’ll cover them with a material (which I have tubs of) to match the personality.  I did cheat and buy magnets to go with them.

Yeah, I can’t believe I’m almost done.

wild-turkeyWe don’t always celebrate the holiday’s.  Not for any other reason than we just don’t feel like it.  It’s like taking a break from all the madness.  It actually makes the next time you celebrate the holidays even better.

This year there will be holiday celebrations and I’m really looking forward to it.

My daughter and some of her girl friends are coming over next weekend and we’re all going to do crafts together.  I have lots of craft stuff so we won’t have to buy much.  These crafts will make great present for them to give to each other or their moms or grandmas.  It will be like when they were younger and in Brownies, only better because we can all have some spiked egg nog if we want to.

I’m also cooking Thanksgiving dinner this year from scratch.  I haven’t done that in years.  We usually order one of those dinners all ready done from the store.  I’ve been looking at some new recipes and have found some really great ones like cranberry mango sauce with a jalapeno in it.  I’ll be making some of the old favorites also, like my great grandmother’s stuffing.  I’m not going to try cramming all the cooking into one though, all start this weekend so I can actually sit down on Thanksgiving and enjoy eating.

Yeah, taking a break from the holidays can be a good thing.  It makes the next holiday celebration bigger and better.
