Don’t you wish sometimes we could see into the future?  I sure wish I could’ve have this fall.  If I had I would have planted a really big fall garden.  Who would have dreamed we would be sitting here on November 20th and almost no snow and only one or two good freezes.  If I had known 60 days ago what I know now I would have planted lots of cold weather vegetables.  I just kept telling myself that the weather wouldn’t hold.  If you plant, even in the greenhouse it will snow tomorrow.

Well there’s nothing I can do about it now, but I sure did miss a good opportunity to have a fall garden.  I still keep telling myself it will snow tomorrow and we really do need it now.  I’ll wait for spring and hope I don’t need to tunnel through the snow to get to the greenhouse then.

16_08_25-snow-scene_webI never thought I would miss snow but I’m really starting to.  By now in my part of Colorado we should have had at least a couple of small snow falls.  Instead we have had one skiff of snow, less than a half inch.

I hate this saying, but it is getting to the point that we really do need the moisture.  Everything is so dry.  I’m even starting to worry about the gardens.  I don’t have anything planted now, because it’s supposed to be snowing.  But I’m worried about next spring.  If it doesn’t start soon we’ll be way down on the moisture level for next year.

For now all I can do is keep my fingers crossed and hope it snows soon.  God I thought I’d never say that.

If you read back quit a few posts I talked about my house plants and how I neglect them in the summer.  I promised that I get to some routine maintenence for them by Thanksgiving and I finally did.

I re-potted a couple of them yesterday.  The poor things, I’m not sure how they were surviving.  One was pretty root bound.  I cleaned out some of the dead sprigs and leaves.  Most of them were none the worse for the neglect.

It is a good thing that they do so well on their own with only a little water from me.  I really should be better to them.  After all it is their greenness that will get be through the winter.

tree_photoLets face it, nature is not always a beautiful thing.  I’m thinking my little part earth isn’t so pretty now.

All of the summer greenery has turned brown and withered.  The trees look more like skeletons without their leaves and the grass is now an ugly color of brown.

Everything needs water, its been a dry fall.  Even on cold mornings there is no frost, there’s not enough humidity.

It should snow soon.  The first of the season.  It’s kind of late this year.  The snow will clear the dust out of the air and make everything look bright and crisp.

Never thought I’d look forward to snow but it will help nature be beautiful again.  It will make it more alive and not seem so brown and dead.

Garden blues October 30, 2008

I think I already have the winter garden blues.  It’s either that or I’m just really tired and burned out.  I can’t seem to get motivated to even think about my gardens.  Usually I don’t feel like this for at least another month, just before the winter catalogs start to come in.

The really weird thing is it’s still warm enough to be working outside, but I can find a hundred reasons why I don’t want to.  Maybe this is my first encounter with garden burn out.  There was a lot going on last summer.

Maybe I just need a change a scenery.  If that’s it then the timing is great.  We are going on vacation next week.  Maybe getting away from my little piece of land will help me appreciate it much more when we get home.  I hope so.

Love thy neighbor October 29, 2008

It doesn’t extend to loving their trees.  Our neighbors have about eight cotton wood trees about six feet or less from the fence line we share.

They planted them about ten years ago to help cool the house in the summer (they are on their south side.)  A very good and environmental friendly idea.  I also enjoy the trees in the summer.  They help to keep my car sitting in the drive cool along with providing shade for my plants in the heat of summer.

But come fall the leaves from all those cotton woods trees don’t seem to know what side of the property line they belong on.  Each fall I rake as many if not more cotton wood leaves than I do from leaves on my own tree.  I know, I enjoy some of the benefits so I shouldn’t mind some extra leaves.

But I do mind.  I’m not even sure why.  I really like the neighbors.  I don’t mind the trees any other time of the year, but I hate those leaves.

Well, I had big plans yesterday for the yard.  Instead I was attacked by a cold Friday afternoon.  I’m feeling much better now, but nothing got done outside yesterday.  And of course the weather isn’t near as nice today as it was yesterday.

Later this week it’s supposed to be real nice again so I’ll try and tackle some of the leaves then.  I’ll either have more to rake or maybe none at all if the wind blows them all away.

Raking up the Gold October 24, 2008

Okay, not real gold, just gold colored leaves.  But I’ll be raking them up most of the day on Saturday.  I really don’t mind the leaves, but we have this one tree out front that grows these long bean pod things.  They are a royal in the ___.  They’re about 12 inches long and when they dry out they are be sharp as spears.  Not fun, not to mention all the holes they put in bags.

Okay, I just had a side thought, (it happens sometimes) does anyone make canvas leave bags?  They would be SO MUCH better than plastic.  I don’t throw my leaves in the trash, they all go in the compost, but I use the bags to get them there.  I can reuse a plastic bag about 6 six times, but canvas, that would be cool.

Back to raking now, it’s supposed to be a nice on Saturday and the raking will get me out of the house so I can soak up some sunshine.

My hobby is gardening.  I’d rather garden than do just about anything else I can think of.  I like my plants better than most people I know.

My husband has a hobby too.  It’s CNN.  I don’t mind when I can outside, but now that’s its colder and there is nothing left in the gardens to work on I mind a lot.

There are 15 days left until the election and I can’t wait for it to be over.  Don’t get me wrong, I realize this election is important and I plan on voting early this week.  So does my husband.  He already knows who he voting for and still watches about four hours a day of election news.  Why?

I need a moment of silence, or at least some really nice weather so I can go outside.  I probably won’t get the really nice weather during the last part of October in Colorado.  Oh well.

In about two weeks, we the people will pick a new president of these United States.

I don’t believe that either of the top two options, (there are about eight candidates in all depending on your state)  will be able to fix the top five problems, health care, taxes, finance mess, war and social security.  These issues are just to big for any one person it fix.

So I won’t vote on any of these issues.  I will vote on issues that one person will effect and possibly effect for years to come.

Environmental Protection is top of the list of issues for me.  The next president will have the ability to strengthen federal laws ranging from fuel economy to alternative energy to endangered animals.  They will also at some point during their presidency appoint federal judges that will uphold and interpret these laws for years to come.

When you vote think about the issues that the next president has a real chance of changing or effecting, not just the big five which no one individual will ever be able to change.
