16_08_25-snow-scene_webFinally, some snow.  Not nearly enough, but a couple of inches.  What we really is need is rain.  About 3 days of a long, slow rain.

We’ll take the snow for now.  I’m still holding the rain dance in reserve though.

sol_a_portrait_of_our_sun_1__rthorvaldIt’s official, this February was the driest on record.  I wouldn’t be surprised to learn it was also one of the warmest on record.

The weather guys have began saying that we might want to water a little bit.  Something almost all gardeners around here had already figured out for themselves.

March is not looking any better on the moisture front.  There is no rain, much less snow in the forecast and tomorrow is supposed to above 70 degrees.  Close to another record.

tree_photoMother Nature has given us a double blow this winter, not enough moisture and too much wind.

This week I started watering the gardens and raking and watering the back lawn.  I’ve never done that before in February and we’ve lived in our house for 13 years.

In a usual February we should still have snow on the ground in the shady areas of the yard and mud everywhere else.  Not this year.

I’ll keep watering a little until we get some moisture.  I’m afraid if I don’t do it now it will be to late in a couple of months and there will be no hope for the gardens and this grass this spring.

tempeture20conversionsWe should be dealing with snow drifts or at the very least mud puddles everywhere.  Instead we have been left high and dry.  Average snow fall for Denver at this time of year for the season is about 62 inches.  So far for this season we’ve had only 16 inches of snow.

It is true that March and April are two of our snowiest months, but I’m starting to get worried.  I rely on a wet winter to give the gardens the jump start they need in the spring.

If we don’t get much snow or even rain during the next six weeks I’ll probably scale back my planting plans.  I’d rather down size the gardens now instead of going ahead with the plantings and hoping for the best later.

I know from experience that it can be both expensive and time consuming to keep a garden going when there is not enough water.

But for the next weeks I’ll appeal to Mother Nature for more moisture.

16_08_25-snow-scene_webI am not a fan of winter.  I don’t enjoy any of the out door sports or look forward to the below zero temps.  I need more day light than there is during winter.  I hate not being able to be outside in the gardens.

I do realize that the land needs a good rest and winter is when it gets to rest.  It’s like the gardens are sleeping under a blanket of white just waiting for the spring time.

That’s what I do too.  Curled up under a blanket inside I’m dreaming of the warm spring and hot summer.  I plan new gardens and think about what new seeds to grow.  I dream of a warm sun on my shoulders and the smell of dirt.

But for now that’s all it is, a dream.  The reality is there is six inches of snow covering everything and it’s a whole two degree’s above zero.  The land is resting and will be for another three months or so.

Winter weather catch up November 30, 2008

The wind howled all day today.  There was snow earlier, making more mud for Bubba track inside.  The skies are a slate gray with just a touch of red as the sun sinks down below the horizon.  Tonight will not be a good time for man or beast outside.  Our beautiful fall has come to an end.

The house has been cool all day, but I refuse to touch the thermostat.  I’ll either wrap in a blanket or work on my afghan.  Afghan’s make a good winter project.

The electric heater has ran almost non-stop in the sun room.  I don’t like using it, it takes so much power.  But there is no other heat source in there and without it most of the plants won’t survive the cold.  It also drys the air out.  It seems like I’m out there every few hours giving everything a good douse of water.  But I can’t think of a better way for the plants to stay warm and I’m not willing to let them die.

And then there was mud November 30, 2008

sunkenmudpoolYesterday’s snow was beautiful, but it didn’t last long.  It all melted away, and made some wonderful mud for Bubba to play in.  That dog loves mud.  If there is one spot of it anywhere in the yard he will find it.

I must have sweep the kitchen floor 3 times yesterday trying to keep it kind of clean.  I love the rich wet dirt in my gardens, but I’m not so happy about it on the floors.  I wish I could teach Bubba how to wipe his feet, or at least be more lady like outside.  Allie almost never gets mud on her on feet.

Oh well, I guess there is a down side to everything and the down side to beautiful snow is mud.

16_08_25-snow-scene_web2The first snow of the season is magic.  I sat in our sun room last night and watched flacks the size of quarters fall from the sky.  The sky itself is beautiful when it snows, especially at night.  The night ski gets brighter when the snow is falling.

The snow fall was not much by Colorado standards, not much more than a dusting.  But it was cold last night and the snow has that layer of crunchy frost on it this morning.

The snow probably won’t through the day.  But it truly did make last night and this morning a white and crisp wonderland.

16_08_25-snow-scene_webI never thought I would miss snow but I’m really starting to.  By now in my part of Colorado we should have had at least a couple of small snow falls.  Instead we have had one skiff of snow, less than a half inch.

I hate this saying, but it is getting to the point that we really do need the moisture.  Everything is so dry.  I’m even starting to worry about the gardens.  I don’t have anything planted now, because it’s supposed to be snowing.  But I’m worried about next spring.  If it doesn’t start soon we’ll be way down on the moisture level for next year.

For now all I can do is keep my fingers crossed and hope it snows soon.  God I thought I’d never say that.

tree_photoLets face it, nature is not always a beautiful thing.  I’m thinking my little part earth isn’t so pretty now.

All of the summer greenery has turned brown and withered.  The trees look more like skeletons without their leaves and the grass is now an ugly color of brown.

Everything needs water, its been a dry fall.  Even on cold mornings there is no frost, there’s not enough humidity.

It should snow soon.  The first of the season.  It’s kind of late this year.  The snow will clear the dust out of the air and make everything look bright and crisp.

Never thought I’d look forward to snow but it will help nature be beautiful again.  It will make it more alive and not seem so brown and dead.
